Primary Prevention Strategies

Presenter: Gary Evans Gary Evans is a retired primary teacher having taught Grade 2 and Grades 2/3 combined classes as well as Middle Years classes in his career. He is member of K-8 Manitoba Social Studies Inservice Team, and a presenter at SAG, Summer Institute, and various inservices in Manitoba at the K-8 levels. He previously taught teachers-in-training at University of Manitoba and University of Winnipeg. He was involved in the writing of the Grades 5 and 8 Social Studies texts.

FASD: Principles & Strategies

Presenter: Susan Opie - Susan Opie (BA, BSW, MSW, RSW) has over 10 years experience working with individuals with FASD and their families, providing individual and family counseling, educational information, and advocacy with various systems impacting families and children. She has provided consultation for and individual therapy to youth with FASD in care, facilitated support groups for families affected by FASD, and provided education, consultation, and training to various systems working with families and/or children and youth with FASD.

Description: This two day session is sponsored by Child and Family Services’ Joint Training Unit and provides hands-on principles and strategies for those working and living alongside individuals with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder. Participants are given a glimpse into how individuals with FASD experience and process their world, and how this might impact parents and caregivers as they care for children and youth.

Sessions topics will include:

  • De-stigmatizing FASD
  • Updating diagnostic terms and process
  • A look at primary versus secondary disabilities, and protective factors for children and youth with FASD
  • Building solid relationships with children, youth, (or adults) with FASD
  • Accommodating specific brain differences when parenting and providing services
  • Group exercise: Looking at ‘meltdowns’: prevention and responses
  • Utilizing strengths with individuals with FASD
  • Discipline with children and youth with FASD
  • Difficult issues that may arise with individuals with FASD: ‘Lying,’ ‘Stealing,’ AWOLs/running away, substance abuse…

ICT Session (SMART Board)

Kevin Cameron - Risk Threat Assessment Level 2

Presenter: J. Kevin Cameron, M.Sc., R.S.W.
In concert with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, Behavioural Sciences Unit, Kevin Cameron developed Canada's first comprehensive, multidisciplinary threat assessment training program. He trains crisis response teams internationally and consults with schools and communities impacted by trauma. He has years of experience, providing high-risk assessment and intervention with children, youth and families.

Description: Referred to as “Strategic Interviewing in Threat Assessment”, this two day training focuses on strategic interviewing of key individuals in the threat assessment process: threat maker(s), target(s), collaterals, reporter(s), and parents/caregivers. A more comprehensive look at types of high-risk youth is presented. Skill development, case studies, and role-playing are aspects of this training.

Who Done It? Using Electrophoresis in the Classroom

Description: Participants will use hands on activities to become familiar with the principles and practices of agarose gels to identify DNA markers. It allows teachers to explore various forensic technologies to solve mysteries they set up in class. Recombinant DNA technology is one of the most significant advances in biology of our time. These advances have transformed the fields of medicine and technology. If time permits, we will also perform a protein testing activity. This session would be applicable to participants who teach junior high and high school sciences or anyone with an interest in the field.
